Why sitting at 100% wears a battery

The short answer: at full charge the anode sits at such a low potential that the electrolyte keeps reacting and eating lithium, while the cathode is stripped of so much lithium that its structure strains. The longer it stays there, and the hotter it is, the faster it ages. Touching 100% briefly barely matters.

Before you read

The main cause of ageing while parked is SEI growth on the anode, which speeds up at high charge. Keil et al. (2016) showed the graphite's low potential at high charge is the main accelerator. [4]
Nickel-rich cells (NMC/NCA) add a cathode problem: the lattice contracts abruptly near 4.2 V and particles crack. [13]
What counts is hours spent parked high multiplied by temperature, not touching 100% just before you leave.

Both electrodes' potentials as the battery fills

Chapter 1 called the cell voltage the height of a hill between the electrodes. Each electrode has its own level too. Charging pushes the cathode up and the anode down. The trouble is that the electrolyte is only stable within a window: if the anode goes very low, the electrolyte is reduced into more SEI; if the cathode goes very high, the electrolyte is oxidised. Both consume lithium and slowly erase capacity. Move the slider to see where each electrode sits.

H2→H3Each electrode's potential vs Li/Li⁺ follows from . Graphite runs at 0.08–0.25 V, always below EC's reduction potential (~0.8 V), so the SEI must exist to passivate it kinetically. It is never perfect: its growth rate rises with the electrochemical driving force, i.e. as falls. Data-fitted models (e.g. NREL BLAST-Lite for LFP/graphite) therefore carry an term. On the NMC side, at V you add electrolyte oxidation, transition-metal dissolution, surface oxygen release and the H2→H3 phase transition. [32] [10]

Electrode potentials vs the electrolyte's stability window
Anode potential from the graphite equation of Safari & Delacourt (2011); cathode potential = cell voltage + anode potential. "SEI growth rate" is relative to 50%, using the anode-potential term of NREL's BLAST-Lite model. Electrolyte window values are approximate.

Calendar ageingAgeing while parked: calendar ageing

Batteries age two ways: with use (cycle ageing) and with time (calendar ageing). The second happens even when the car never moves, and depends mostly on two things: the charge level while parked and the temperature. Most cars sit parked more than 90% of the time, so for typical drivers calendar ageing is often the larger share.

Capacity left after storage at different charge levels and temperatures
Models from NREL's BLAST-Lite, each fitted to real test data for that cell (NCA: Keil et al. 2016 data). These are bare lab cells; a car's pack has thermal management and buffers and usually does better. Use them to compare trends between parking habits. [10]

(1) Higher charge means a steeper fall, especially for NCA. (2) Temperature matters as much or more; slide from 25 °C to 35 °C and watch. (3) Each curve drops fastest at first and then slows, because a thicker SEI protects itself better; growth goes roughly with the square root of time.

NMC622 (DENSO 50 Ah automotive cell): , with a cubic in SOC times an Arrhenius term (Ea = 37 kJ/mol). This cell is barely SOC-sensitive, consistent with Keil's finding that fade climbs in steps that follow graphite's staging rather than a straight line. Cells differ, but the weight of evidence says low charge plus cool storage ages slowest. [4]

What actually happens inside at full charge

Fully lithiated graphite sits around 0.085 V, its lowest potential. Electrolyte that seeps through the SEI keeps being reduced and locks lithium into new SEI. That locked lithium is permanently lost capacity (loss of lithium inventory, LLI), the dominant calendar-ageing mechanism. [4]
Electrolyte oxidation (cathode). Above roughly 4.2–4.3 V vs Li the electrolyte breaks down at the cathode surface, forming a CEI film and gas, and resistance rises. [24]
Nickel-rich lattices shrink and crack. Heavily delithiated NMC/NCA undergoes the H2→H3 transition: the c-axis collapses abruptly, and secondary particles made of many small grains crack along grain boundaries. Electrolyte floods the cracks, creating fresh surfaces to react. [13] [34]
Oxygen leaves the cathode surface. Once roughly 80% of the cathode's lithium is removed, NMC surfaces start releasing oxygen (Jung et al. 2017) and reconstruct into a rock-salt layer that lithium crosses poorly. For NMC811 that point lies close to a full charge. [31]
Manganese or nickel leached from the cathode migrates to the anode and accelerates SEI growth there ("cross-talk"). [26]
A nickel-rich cathode particle, charged high again and again
Conceptual: a ~10 µm secondary particle made of primary grains. Above about 4.1–4.2 V the grains shrink unevenly in different directions, so boundaries separate. Not computed from a mechanical model.

Time spent high matters more than the number

Compare two habits. (A) Plug in at 6 pm on arrival: full by 10 pm, then waiting full all night. (B) Schedule charging to finish at 7 am, just before leaving. Both leave with the same charge, but (B) spends many fewer hours high every day, and in Thailand it also lands in the off-peak tariff window (after 22:00).

24 hours of a battery: charge on arrival vs finish at departure
Calendar-ageing rate from the same models as above, averaged across the 24 hours and shown relative between the two habits.

100%So why do LFP cars say charge to 100%?

An LFP cathode works at about 3.4–3.5 V vs Li, far below where the electrolyte starts to oxidise, and has no H2→H3-type collapse, so the cathode-side problems mostly vanish. Only the anode side (SEI on graphite) remains. LFP is therefore far less sensitive to sitting at 100%, while it needs regular full charges for its BMS to re-anchor the gauge (chapters 2 and 9). That is why Tesla tells LFP owners to "keep your charge limit set to 100%, even for daily use" and to fully charge "at least once per week". [11]

Your car's manual comes first

The maker knows its buffers, cells and BMS. If the manual says 100% for LFP, do that. For NMC/NCA, if it recommends 80–90% for daily use, stick to it and go to 100% for long trips, leaving soon after it finishes.

What to do

NMC/NCA: set the daily limit to 80–90% (or what the manual says); go to 100% only for long trips and try to leave within an hour or two of it finishing.
LFP: follow the manual; most say 100%, with a full charge at least weekly.
50–60%Every chemistry: use the departure-time setting so charging ends near when you leave; avoid long hours in the sun while the battery is high; for days or weeks of parking, leave it around 50–60%.
Side note: at 100% the car limits regenerative braking because there is nowhere to put the energy, so the first few kilometres feel different.
