Why charging slows after 80%

When the battery is low, the charger can push hard. Near full, the car must keep cutting current for three reasons: voltage hits its ceiling, nearly-full graphite risks lithium plating, and every cell has to finish together. The last 20% can take as long as the first 70%.

Picture it like this

Think of an empty cinema. At first people stream in because seats are everywhere. Near full, latecomers must hunt for the few seats left deep in the middle of rows. Rush them in at the same pace and they end up sitting in the aisles (that is lithium "plating" on the surface instead of slipping into the graphite), so the usher slows the queue.

Play with the simulator below. Pick an example pack and a charger and see what limits the power at each moment. The line's colour shows the limiting factor.

Fast-charging simulator
Example packs follow published specs for each class (e.g. LFP 60 kWh doing 10–80% in about 24 minutes). The BMS current maps are estimates tuned to match real-world times, not manufacturer data. Cost uses the price you set. The 1 MW option follows BYD's announced 1000 V / 1000 A platform. [35] [16]

(CC-CV)Reason 1: the voltage ceiling (CC-CV)

CV (Constant Voltage)To push current in, the charger must sit above the battery's own voltage. The extra is the "pushing voltage", equal to current times resistance (I×R). But the cell's terminal voltage must never exceed its ceiling (about 4.2 V for NMC/NCA, 3.65 V for LFP). Near full, the battery's own voltage is high, leaving little headroom to push, so current must fall. The first, fixed-current stage is CC (constant current); the second, where voltage is held at the ceiling while current tapers, is CV (constant voltage).

NMCCC-CV charging of one NMC cell
The higher the CC current, the sooner voltage hits the ceiling, so CV starts earlier (at a lower %). The example cell uses a fixed internal resistance for clarity.

Reason 2, the big one: avoiding lithium plating

While charging, lithium must slip inside graphite flakes, and each flake's surface fills before its core. If the surface is full but lithium keeps arriving too fast, it has nowhere to go and deposits as metal on the surface: lithium plating. Some of it never comes back (capacity lost for good), and if it grows into needles (dendrites) it can pierce the separator. So the BMS carries a map of the maximum safe current versus charge level and temperature. The fuller or colder the battery, the lower the safe current.

That is favoured by (1) an already-low equilibrium potential (high SOC), (2) high overpotential (high current, or low temperature slowing kinetics and diffusion), and (3) surface concentration running ahead of the average because solid diffusion lags. The simple model below takes from the Safari–Delacourt fit, subtracts an Arrhenius overpotential, and finds the largest current that keeps a 10 mV margin. [9] [29]

Maximum plating-free current vs charge level and temperature
A simplified physics model to explain the shape (kd=0.12, ra=25 mV/C at 25 °C, Ea=40 kJ/mol are illustrative). Real BMS maps come from exhaustive testing of each cell and keep wider margins.

This is why preconditioning (warming the battery before fast charging) matters in cold countries, and why a cold battery charges painfully slowly. In Thailand it is the opposite: packs are usually warm enough already, so the system works to stop them overheating. On the charge-level side every car is the same: the fuller it gets, the lower the safe current.

Reason 3: waiting for every cell to finish

9A pack has around a hundred series groups that are never perfectly identical. A group with slightly less capacity fills first, and the BMS must throttle the whole pack so that group never passes the ceiling. Near the top it also "balances", bleeding a little energy from the early finishers as heat or shuffling it to others, until all groups match. Chapter 9 has the details.

400 V versus 800 V

Power = voltage × current. With current capped at about 500 A by cables and connectors, a 400 V pack gets roughly 200 kW while an 800 V pack gets roughly 400 kW. Flip it around: at equal power, 800 V draws half the current, so cable heating (I²R) drops to a quarter. One catch: some 800 V cars on chargers that top out near 500 V need an on-board booster, and usually charge much more slowly.

AC versus DC

Household power is alternating current (AC) but batteries store direct current (DC). AC charging therefore runs through the car's on-board charger (OBC), typically 7–22 kW. DC fast chargers do the conversion in a big cabinet and feed DC straight to the pack, bypassing the OBC, so they can deliver hundreds of kilowatts. In Thailand, AC uses Type 2 plugs and DC mostly CCS2. Home AC charging also has losses: ADAC found 12.7–24.2% lost on a 2.3 kW household socket, but only 5.1–7.0% on an 11 kW wallbox, because fixed overheads (electronics, pumps) are spread over fewer hours. Summary, and how to fast-charge smartly

Peak power happens at low charge; arrive at 10–20% to get it.
Leaving at around 80% usually beats waiting for full; the last 20% is slow.
A cold pack charges slowly and an overheated one gets throttled. Navigating to the charger in the car lets it prepare the battery temperature.
A 150 kW charger doesn't mean 150 kW all the way. Actual power is the smallest of the charger, the cable and the BMS map at that moment.
