How a battery cell works

Everything else on this site, from why 100% wears a cell to why charging slows after 80%, comes back to one idea: lithium ions shuttling between two electrodes. This chapter is that foundation.

Lithium's rocking chair

A lithium-ion cell gives lithium two homes. One is the positive electrode (cathode); the other is the negative electrode (anode), usually graphite, the same carbon as a pencil lead. Charging pushes lithium out of the cathode and into the anode. Driving lets it move back on its own, and that return trip is what releases energy to the motor.

The trick is that lithium travels inside the cell as an ion (Li⁺, missing one electron) through a liquid, while the electron has to take the long way round through the outside wire. That outside flow is the current we use. If electrons could cut through the inside, the cell would short-circuit, so a thin separator lets ions through but blocks electrons.

A lithium-ion cell is an intercalation system on both sides: lithium neither dissolves nor plates as metal in normal operation, it slides in and out of host lattices whose framework stays intact, hence the "rocking-chair" name. On charge the cathode is oxidised and releases Li⁺ into the electrolyte; the anode is reduced, taking up Li⁺ plus an electron from the external circuit.

Left-to-right is charging (M is the transition metal: Ni, Mn, Co). The open-circuit voltage is set by the difference in lithium's chemical potential between the two electrodes:

3–5where = 96,485 C/mol (Faraday's constant) and are each electrode's potential against lithium metal (V vs Li/Li⁺), each depending on how much lithium it holds. That is why voltage tracks state of charge, and it is the key to chapters 3–5.

Inside a cell, charging and driving
Try it: switch between charging and driving and change the current. Red dots are lithium ions crossing the electrolyte; blue dots are electrons in the outside wire. They always travel in the same direction.

Picture it like this

Imagine two car parks on a hill: a lower one (the cathode) and an upper one (the anode). Charging drives cars (lithium) up into the upper car park, which takes energy. Driving lets them roll back down, giving the energy back. A taller hill (higher voltage) and more cars (more capacity) store more energy.

The units worth getting straight

The classic mix-up is kWh versus kW. The first is an amount of energy (the size of the tank); the second is a rate (how fast the pump runs). In an ideal world a 60 kWh pack on a 60 kW charger fills in one hour.

หน่วยUnitคืออะไรWhat it isตัวอย่างExample
V (โวลต์)(volt)แรงดัน = แรงผลักต่ออิเล็กตรอน 1 ตัว (ความสูงของเขา)Voltage: the push on each electron (height of the hill)เซลล์ NMC 3.6–3.7 V, LFP 3.2 V, แพ็กรถ 350–800 VNMC cell 3.6–3.7 V, LFP 3.2 V, car packs 350–800 V
Charge: how many "cars" it can moveเซลล์ 2170 ราว 5 Ah, เซลล์ปริซึม LFP 150–300 Ah2170 cell ~5 Ah, LFP prismatic 150–300 Ah
Energy ≈ voltage × charge350 V × 200 Ah = 70 kWh350 V × 200 Ah = 70 kWh
Power = rate of energy flow = voltage × current400 V × 500 A = 200 kW400 V × 500 A = 200 kW
Current relative to capacity; 1C fills or empties it in an hourแบต 75 kWh ชาร์จ 250 kW ≈ 3.3C75 kWh pack at 250 kW ≈ 3.3C
130–180 Wh/kmEV sedan 130–180 Wh/km
Energy = voltage × charge
พื้นที่ของสี่เหลี่ยมคือพลังงานที่เก็บได้ ความสูงคือแรงดัน ความกว้างคือความจุ (Ah) ลองเปลี่ยนแล้วดูระยะทางกับเวลาชาร์จในอุดมคติ (ของจริงช้ากว่านี้ อ่านเหตุผลในบทที่ 5)The rectangle's area is the stored energy: height is voltage, width is capacity in Ah. Change them and watch the range and the ideal charging time (real charging is slower; chapter 5 explains why).

Precise definitions

Energy is not exactly V × Ah, because voltage changes throughout discharge. The exact value is the integral of voltage over charge, and it depends on current because of the drop across internal resistance:

ความหนาแน่นพลังงานระดับเซลล์ (Wh/kg) สูงกว่าระดับแพ็กเสมอ เพราะแพ็กต้องมีโครงสร้าง ระบบระบายความร้อน สายไฟ และ BMS อัตราส่วนน้ำหนักเซลล์ต่อแพ็ก (cell-to-pack ratio) ของรถยุคใหม่อยู่ราว 60–75% และสูงขึ้นในแพ็กแบบ CTP/CTB ที่ตัดโมดูลออก (ดูบทที่ 2)Cell-level energy density (Wh/kg) always exceeds pack level, because a pack adds structure, cooling, wiring and the BMS. Modern cell-to-pack mass ratios sit around 60–75%, higher in CTP/CTB packs that drop the modules (see chapter 2).

From one cell to a whole pack

A single cell gives only 3–4 V, while the motor wants hundreds of volts. Cells are wired in series (S) so voltages add, and in parallel (P) so capacities add. A Tesla Model 3 Long Range uses 2170 cylindrical cells as 96S46P, 4,416 cells in all; LFP packs with large prismatic or Blade cells often use just over a hundred big cells in a single series string.

Build a pack from cells
เลือกชนิดเซลล์ แล้วปรับจำนวนอนุกรม (S) กับขนาน (P) จุดแต่ละจุดคือหนึ่งเซลล์ สีเดียวกันในแนวตั้งคือกลุ่มขนานที่มีแรงดันเท่ากัน BMS ต้องวัดแรงดันทุกกลุ่ม (บทที่ 9)Pick a cell, then set series (S) and parallel (P). Each dot is a cell; each vertical column is a parallel group sharing one voltage, and the BMS measures every one of them (chapter 9).

Charge level, battery health and the hidden buffers

ตัวเลขบนหน้าจอคือ SOC (State of Charge) หรือ % พลังงานที่เหลือเทียบกับความจุตอนนั้น ส่วน SOH (State of Health) คือความจุตอนนี้เทียบกับตอนใหม่ แบตที่ SOH 90% ชาร์จ “เต็ม 100%” ก็ได้พลังงานแค่ 90% ของตอนป้ายแดง
The number on screen is the SOC (state of charge): energy left relative to the pack's current capacity. SOH (state of health) compares today's capacity with new. At 90% SOH, a "100%" charge holds only 90% of the energy it held when new.
Makers also keep some energy out of reach as a buffer, so 0% on screen is not truly empty, and for some brands 100% on screen is not the cell's absolute limit either.

What the screen says vs what the cells see
Real buffer sizes vary by model and are rarely published; the numbers here only illustrate the principle.

DoD (Depth of Discharge) DoD (depth of discharge) is how deep one cycle goes: from 80% down to 30% is 50% DoD. Chapter 4 shows why many shallow cycles are kinder than a few deep ones that move the same total energy.

Chapter summary

Charging pushes lithium from the cathode into the graphite anode; driving lets it flow back. Ions go through the inside, electrons through the outside wire.
  • kWh คือขนาดถัง kW คือความเร็วการเติม C-rate บอกว่าเติมเร็วแค่ไหนเทียบกับขนาดถังkWh is the tank size, kW the filling speed, and C-rate the speed relative to the tank.
Cell voltage depends on how much lithium each electrode holds. The anode's very low potential when full is the root of several problems in the chapters ahead.
The SEI forms on its own and is essential, but its slow growth is the main reason batteries age with time.
